The story behind AI 101 Academy NPC
Her leadership extends across influential African and global networks. She serves as South Africa Country Lead for Africa Women in AI, Africa Chapter Co-Director for WIRAM, a SHE Advisory Board Member for Africa, a Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering Ambassador, and a founding member of Global South Women in STEM. These roles connect AI 101 Academy NPC to a growing ecosystem of engineers, innovators, educators, women leaders and change-makers advancing inclusive technology across Africa. Unathi is an ECSA Candidate Engineering Technologist, a Project Management Professional (PMP), and an engineering and business leader with a strong record of translating complex technical challenges into practical solutions. She was selected as a Top 3 South African nominee for the 2025 BRICS Young Innovator Prize and recognised among WomHub's 100 Women Leading with Impact in Engineering. In 2026, she was named a finalist in the Forty Under 40 South Africa Awards in Technology and Innovation, as well as a finalist in the Women in STEAM Awards for both Engineering and Artificial Intelligence. Her story began in Tembisa, where she experienced how unequal access to opportunity can shape a person's future. As a young mother who continued pursuing her education despite significant challenges, she understands the life-changing power of knowledge, mentorship and possibility. AI 101 Academy NPC is her commitment to ensuring that millions of Africans, regardless of background, can access the skills, confidence and networks needed to shape the future of AI.
Unathi Pretty Mbengwana is an engineering specialist, responsible AI leader, entrepreneur and social-impact founder committed to ensuring that Africa participates meaningfully in the AI economy. She is the Founder and CEO of New Innovations Consulting and Projects - NICP (Pty) Ltd, creator of Water Treatment Expert AI™, and Founder and Executive Director of AI 101 Academy NPC. With more than a decade of experience in engineering, water and sanitation, infrastructure reliability, operational excellence and digital transformation, Unathi brings practical industry insight to the Academy's mission of making AI and digital skills accessible to all.
